Corps of Engineers considers changes to CBR procedure

The Corps of Engineers held a conference at the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to consider major changes to the CBR design procedure for flexible pavements. A panel consisting of Professor Matt Witczak, Arizona State University; Professor Carl Monismith, University of California at Berkeley; and Professor Marshall Thompson, University of Illinois; considered the proposed changes and offered comments. Organizations asked to participate in the conference included the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Boeing, Airbus and the Asphalt Institute.

In recent years, the CBR design procedure has come under question as being unsuitable for design of pavements for modern aircraft with six-wheel gear assemblies. The last major revision to the CBR design equation came in 1971. A formal report documenting the project and describing the changes to the procedure is expected to be published soon.
