From November 8 – 9, the latest AI “Hot Mix Asphalt 101” seminar was presented in Pennsylvania with 96 individuals attending. This seminar debuted three years ago when Pennsylvania identified the need for a basic HMA course. The Asphalt Institute met the need with a workshop designed for persons with one to five years experience with asphalt pavements. The first day of the seminar is devoted to materials (PG-grades, aggregates and mix design). The second day focuses on construction, with a brief study of HMA plants then covering proper paver operations and compaction principles. Each day concludes with a practical exercise which allows the participants to apply the day’s training.
Industry representatives assisted with the training. Dale Starry (Ingersoll-Rand) gave a presentation on HMA placement and Chuck Deahl (Bomag Americas) gave one on compaction. The course evaluations, completed by participants, gave the overall course an excellent rating.
